More to it than you know

This Saturday, July 26th, 2025, Local 3 and DC16 will be partnering with the Lend A Hand Foundation, CBTU-NCC, Cypress Mandela and many other community partners to participate in the 26th Annual Stay In School Packing Event. We will be assisting with setting up and packing backpacks with school supplies and items to ensure they are prepared for the upcoming school year, which will be distributed at designated schools in Alameda county at a later time. Studies have shown that students who start school with the supplies they need in the classroom and at home are more motivated, have higher self-esteem, and enjoy a better learning experience overall. If you’re available, come and “Lend A Hand” at this incredible event.
On July 25th, myself along with Business Representatives Tommy Sandavol from Local 3 and Carlos Flores from Local 83 visited the members working for KBI Painting Inc who are currently doing a summer repaint project located at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa. We only had about 17% of the repaint market share when this campaign began back in 2020. Thanks to the sacrifices and efforts from our amazing organizing department, we currently have about 72% of that market, which is an increase of 55% in 5 short years and is still growing. And it is because of these efforts that our signatory, KBI, was able to secure this bid and provide work for a crew of 13 on this project. Thank you to all the brothers and sisters who continue to be an example of “High Performance, High Value”, showing the industry why we deserve to be the highest paid in our crafts.

On Tuesday, July 22nd, myself along with several council members, organizations and community partners attended the Board of Supervisors meeting to voice our support for the sale of the Oakland Coliseum to Ray Bobbit and the African American Sports and Entertainment Group. The Alameda Board voted unanimously to sell its share to AASEG, nearly a year after the city approved to sell its share. AASEG agreed to buy its share for 1 billion dollars with a plan to invest another 5 billion into development. They plan to develop this site into 4000 units of housing with 1000 designated as low-income housing, as well as bringing hotels, retail, office space, restaurants, upgraded transportation options and professional sports teams back to the heart of East Oakland. These efforts will create work for all our crafts within DC16 and have the potential to keep our membership working for many years to come. Although plans are still a way off and this isn’t the final step, it brings us closer to bringing the Coliseum corridor back to greatness and creating consistent work for our union brothers and sisters throughout the bay area.
