Local 1621: Standing Together for Recovery
Posted October 3, 2025

Last night, members of Local 1621 joined our DC16 union family for an unforgettable Recovery Night—an evening that shined a light on addiction, mental health, and the power of support. It was powerful to see our Local represented, standing side by side with brothers and sisters from across DC16.
The reality is that construction workers face some of the highest rates of suicide and addiction of any industry. We know the pressure, the physical toll, and the long hours can weigh heavy—not just
on us, but on our families too. That’s why breaking the stigma is so important. Asking for help is not weakness—it’s strength, and it saves lives.
After losing 182 members in just 12 months to suicide and addiction, DC16 made a promise: No more silent struggles. Out of that commitment, the Helping Hand Program was created—and it’s
saving lives. So far, 99 members are still with us today because they reached out and got the help they needed.
At Local 1621, we want every member to know: you don’t have to carry it alone. This program isn’t just for you—it’s also here for your children, your husband or wife, and your loved ones. Addiction
and mental health struggles affect whole families, and together we can heal.
Our members also heard powerful messages at Recovery Night:
🗣 “It is never too late. No matter how bad it was, there is hope and there is an answer.” – Jeff
Roberts
🗣 “Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a community.” – Dr. Deb
🗣 “DC16 is giving children back their mothers and fathers. All the wages and benefits mean nothing
if we’re losing lives.” – Daniel Lincoln
🗣 “It’s okay to not be okay. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak—it’s one of your greatest strengths.” – Angela Njoroge
This program would not exist without James Boster, Director of Mental Health & Addiction Services, and Robert Williams, DC16 BMST, whose leadership has turned our promise into action.
Local 1621 and DC16 are leading the way by:
✔ Breaking stigma in construction
✔ Providing real resources
✔ Restoring hope to families
✔ Giving our members back their lives
We’re not just building structures—we’re building each other up.
If you’re a Local 1621 member and you or your family are struggling, please reach out to James Boster at jamesb@dc16iupat.org.
You are not alone.
