It’s a matter of dollars and cents

Posted October 7, 2025

Brothers and sisters,

I hope article finds you working and staying out to the rain. This coming Tuesday October 7th, we will have a Special Called Meeting to decide if we are going to take 10 cents from our annuity and re-allocate it to the STARs Program. In the last 18 years the program has operated on 25 cents an hour per working member. In 2015 during contract negotiations management proposed the STARs and agreed to fund it at 25 cents an hour. When I say they agreed to fund it, I mean that if the contract was worth $15.00 dollars over three years, the total cost to management was $15.00 dollars and 25 cents. Being a Business Rep. I am not eligible for the STARs Raffle nor is any employee of DC16.

With that being said I am still in favor of re-allocating the monies, the STARs program is more than the chance to win a truck or other swag. Several of our trades have it written into their contract that to get a dispatch they must have certain safety certifications. If you need a cert you can get through the STARs Program. If you need to brush up on your skills or learn a new skill set the STARs Program will assist you. Recently the Painters Pension, Board of Trustees agreed to increase the pension for members who had a certain number of years vested in the pension plan and who took 16 hours of STARs training. With the Resilient Pension now in the “green” status, this could possibly happen for us, but we would have to be participants in the STARs Program.

I hope that you will make every effort to attend the meeting so we can discuss this matter and do what’s right for us. If you would like to talk to me about this matter you can reach me at (916)407-8279

Fraternally,

Randy Rojas
