LU 718 & DC 16 Endorsements

Posted April 2, 2026

Brothers and Sisters,

At our last membership meeting, the local made 2 political candidate endorsements.  We endorsed Alan Wong for San Francisco Board of Supervisors, District 4 and David Canepa for San Mateo County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder & Chief Elections Officer.

Alan Wong

Alan Wong is a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of San Francisco’s Sunset District. Born to immigrant parents from Hong Kong, he grew up in the neighborhood, attending local public schools including De Avila Elementary, Herbert Hoover Middle, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Inspired by his father’s work as a unionized hotel cook, Alan embraced a commitment to working families early on. He began his higher education at City College of San Francisco before earning a bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego and a master’s in public affairs from the University of San Francisco.

His career reflects a strong focus on education, labor rights, and community service. Alan worked as an organizer and negotiator with SEIU-United Healthcare Workers, advocating for hospital and homecare workers, and served as a delegate to the San Francisco Labor Council. He later became a legislative aide to Supervisor Gordon Mar, helping advance policies like free tuition at City College. Elected to the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees in 2020, he rose to board president, championing accessible education. In December 2025, Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed him Supervisor for District 4, where he continues his service alongside over 15 years in the California Army National Guard as a first lieutenant. Alan’s path highlights his deep roots in the community and unwavering dedication to improving lives in San Francisco.

David Canepa

David Canepa is a dedicated public servant with more than two decades of elected leadership in San Mateo County government. First elected to the Daly City City Council in 2008, he served as mayor before winning election to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for District 5 in 2016. He has since been re-elected to a third term and has served as Board President, guiding the county through major challenges while holding key regional roles on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, SamTrans, and other commissions focused on transportation, air quality, and health.

A longtime champion for working families and organized labor, Canepa has earned strong support and endorsements from the San Mateo County Central Labor Council, Teamsters Local 350, National Union of Healthcare Workers, and National Nurses United. He led the historic approval of the county’s first broad Project Labor Agreement for public works projects, creating union jobs, protecting worker safety and wages, and opening career pathways for veterans, women, and people of color. His accomplishments include passing a balanced $4.9 billion budget in 2025, securing over $350 million for more than 4,500 affordable housing units, directing more than $1 billion to the Caltrain Electrification Project and critical infrastructure, expanding immigration legal services and protections, launching major public health and navigation centers, and advancing economic mobility programs—all while consistently fighting for equity, transparency, and stronger communities across the Peninsula.

When it’s time to vote

When it comes time to cast your vote, I know everyone of us casts the vote that we feel is right for our lives and the lives of our loved ones. I’d ask you to think about what that candidate has done for Labor and Working-class families. Has that candidates actions reflected in more work and better conditions for the lives of our members? Without a doubt I know the 2 above-mentioned endorsements stand up to that litmus test.

In Solidarity,

Local 718
