718 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT!

The San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) hosts an annual Open House each spring as part of National Public Works Week, offering the public—especially local schoolchildren—a rare behind-the-scenes look at the vital work that keeps the city clean, safe, and running smoothly. Held at the DPW Operations Yard, the family-friendly event features interactive activities including building and planting planter boxes, riding in bucket trucks, exploring the cement shop and glass shop, and getting up close with heavy equipment and city vehicles. Union representatives are also on site to share information about career opportunities in the trades.

This year, Glaziers Jose Rodriguez and Thomas Patch stood out as they represented their craft and union with excellence in the Glass Shop. Children of all ages filed in to watch the two demonstrate the precision and care required to cut and handle glass, a concept most had never considered. The kids were riveted by the display. Brother Rodriguez, a 20-year union member who joined in January 2006 after years at Golden Gate Glass, brought genuine passion and energy to his presentations. Brother Patch, also a 20-year member who joined in April 2006 after a long career at Mission Glass, provided strong support and presence throughout the day.
Events like this shine a light on the important but often underappreciated role of union members working for public entities such as DPW, Muni, and SFUSD. While many tradespeople build new projects across the city, these brothers and sisters quietly maintain the infrastructure we all rely on every day—bringing deep knowledge, skill, and dedication to their essential work.
