I had a friend in the trade who recommended I join, right out of high school I started my Apprenticeship. The structure and organization of the Apprenticeship program and the trainings we are offered has benefited me throughout my career. It is also reassuring knowing that the person working next to me has the knowledge and skillset, someone I can rely on.  Being in the Union has great pay and benefits, I recently bought my first home.
