Why Union Members Say NO to Proposition 45, Prop 45 is an Attack on Our Jobs – Help Us Defeat it in November!

Prop 45 is a direct threat to our jobs and everything we have fought for.

For decades, Building Trades members have fought to make sure construction in California means good union jobs, prevailing wages, strong health and retirement benefits, apprenticeship programs, safe working conditions, and a secure future for our families. We didn’t get those things because developers or corporations decided to give them to us. We fought for them. We also fought for a voice in what gets built in California and under what standards. That voice gives us the leverage to fight for Project Labor Agreements, prevailing wages, good benefits, strong labor standards, and good union jobs — not construction work at the lowest possible cost. Prop 45 takes that voice away.

The anti-union corporations and developers behind Prop 45 claim it will make projects cheaper to build. But what does “cheaper” mean for us? Their version of cheaper can mean lower wages and fewer benefits, weaker labor standards, and more work going to nonunion contractors – all while increasing their profits. And our communities could pay the price too, with less accountability for projects that affect the air we breathe, the neighborhoods we live in, and the quality of life our families deserve.

Without a strong voice, we lose leverage. And when we lose leverage, our jobs, our wages, our benefits, and even whether the work goes union are on the line.

Every day, we lace up our boots and do the hard work of building California. We should not have the wages, benefits, and protections generations of union members fought for sacrificed so developers and corporations can increase their profits.
