Member of the Month Spotlight – Jonathan Gamboa

Local 159 is proud to recognize Jonathan Gamboa as our Member of the Month for May—a distinction that comes at a fitting moment as he celebrates graduating from the apprenticeship and journeying out in April 2026. From the very beginning of his journey, Jonathan has demonstrated what it truly means to be a union member: dedication, pride, growth, and unwavering involvement.

Sponsored into the apprenticeship in September 2023, Jonathan’s rise has been nothing short of impressive. Even entering as an 80% apprentice with over seven years of non-union experience, he approached the program with humility and a mindset focused on continuous learning. He attended around ten apprenticeship classes and has already completed six STAR classes this year alone. Whether it was wallpaper, Venetian plaster, boom and lift, or epoxy, Jonathan embraced every opportunity to sharpen his skills. His belief is simple but powerful: if you’re not learning, you’re not growing—and that applies to everyone, from apprentices to seasoned journeymen.

Jonathan’s work ethic and attention to detail set him apart. He takes pride in doing things the right way, understanding that true craftsmanship comes from following the full process—proper prep, primers, and specifications—not just “getting it done.” His experience in both non-union and union settings has given him a clear perspective: the union builds real painters by emphasizing quality, training, and professionalism.

Beyond his skillset, what truly makes Jonathan exceptional is his level of involvement. He is a familiar face at union events, from VAC functions to picnics, holiday parties, and competitions—and he brings his entire family along to share in those experiences. For Jonathan, union involvement isn’t just about showing up; it’s about building community and creating lasting memories, just like he experienced as a child attending union events with his own father.

The IUPAT has made a significant investment in encouraging member involvement, recognizing that strong participation directly strengthens our union’s power and market share. Jonathan embodies the very goal of that campaign. He understands the value of being engaged—not only to better himself, but to contribute to the strength and future of Local 159. If there were ever a model for the kind of member we should all strive to be, it’s Jonathan.

He is also a strong advocate for training and opportunity. Jonathan recognizes that expanding his skills increases not only his own employability, but also the scope of work his employer can take on—creating more hours and opportunities for everyone. His advice to others is straightforward: take advantage of what the union offers. Sign up for classes, get involved, and don’t hesitate—because the only thing holding you back is your mindset.

Jonathan’s loyalty and pride in Local 159 are undeniable. In a time when we’ve seen members leave for other trades, there is no question where Jonathan stands. His dedication runs deep, and he represents the kind of commitment that strengthens our brotherhood.

Outside of work, Jonathan is just as dedicated—to his family. As a father of five and a soccer coach, he pours the same energy and passion into supporting his children in everything they do. Whether on the job or at home, he leads by example.

Jonathan Gamboa represents the very best of Local 159. He is hardworking, skilled, engaged, and proud to be union. We are grateful for the example he sets and the standard he upholds.

If you want to know what kind of union member you should be—look to Jonathan Gamboa.

Congratulations, Jonathan, and thank you for everything you bring to Local 159.

Regards,

Keith Markland
