Union Women: Stronger Together 💪

Posted mayo 4, 2026

The 2026 Union Women: Stronger Together Conference in San Jose was a powerful reminder that the strength of our movement lies in solidarity—and DC16 and DC36 women and allies showed up in full force to prove exactly that. Held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the conference brought together union sisters, allies, and leaders from across California, all committed to expanding the labor movement and amplifying workers’ voices. From the opening plenary, speakers emphasized a shared truth: our superpower is solidarity. That message echoed throughout the weekend as attendees leaned into workshops, conversations, and collective action with purpose and pride.

Conference hosts and labor leaders, including California Labor Federation President Lorena Gonzalez, set the tone by reminding attendees that they are the strength behind the labor movement and democracy itself. There was a clear call to action—to harness the power each union member holds and to continue building a movement rooted in inclusion, acceptance, and courage. Gonzalez’s message resonated deeply, especially as she spoke candidly about the realities many women face: balancing work, family, and leadership while often feeling like they have to do it all. Her reminder to “give yourself grace” and not be afraid to ask for help struck a chord, reinforcing that taking care of ourselves is part of sustaining the fight.

Throughout the conference, powerful stories and insights were shared by speakers and panelists who are actively shaping the future of labor. From discussions on gender equity and apprenticeship opportunities to navigating job site challenges and building leadership skills, the message was clear: representation and retention matter. Speakers highlighted the importance of creating pathways for women and underrepresented groups, not just to enter the trades, but to thrive in them. The idea that “if you’re not in the blueprint, you become the architect” captured the spirit of resilience and determination that defined the weekend.

A standout moment for DC16 was seeing Local Union 294 Sister Nidia Chicas step into a leadership role, facilitating a workshop discussion on workplace bullying. Nidia did an exceptional job guiding meaningful conversation around an issue that many workers face but too often goes unaddressed. She created space for honest dialogue, bringing attention to the real challenges on job sites while reinforcing the importance of respect, accountability, and standing up for one another. Her leadership reflected the very essence of the conference—empowering women to use their voices and drive change within their workplaces and unions.

The conference also featured inspiring voices like our IUPAT leader and DC16 Sister Madison Hull, who took the stage as a speaker and reinforced the importance of participation at every level of the union. Her message encouraged attendees to step into opportunities—even when they don’t feel fully ready—and to bring others along with them. From raising your hand for new roles to inviting someone into the union, her words underscored how growth happens through action and support. As the conference came to a close, one thing was certain: DC16 and DC36 didn’t just attend—they showed up, engaged, and left even more committed to building power, supporting one another, and continuing the fight for a stronger, more inclusive labor movement.
