DC16 Delegates Attend California AFL-CIO COPE Convention

District Council 16 delegates traveled to Oakland to attend the California AFL-CIO COPE Convention, joining union members from across the state to discuss the issues that matter most to working families. The convention focused on the importance of staying united, supporting pro-labor candidates, and making sure workers have a strong voice in this important election.

This year also marked 125 years of the American labor movement, celebrating generations of workers who have fought for better wages, safer workplaces, and stronger unions.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee thanked union members for everything they do and reminded delegates why their work matters. “We need more affordable housing and child care so working men and women can afford to live here in California,” she said. She also praised organized labor, saying, “Day in and day out you organize, advocate, and fight for the future our families and young people deserve.”

Delegates also heard from gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra, who spoke about putting working people first. He stressed the importance of protecting workers’ rights, supporting immigrant families, and making sure new technology helps workers instead of replacing them.

The convention ended with delegates from unions across California unanimously endorsing Xavier Becerra for Governor, along with many other pro-labor candidates. The endorsement showed the strength and unity of California’s labor movement as unions prepare for an election that will have a major impact on working families.

The message throughout the convention was simple: when workers stand together, we are stronger. By staying involved and voting, union members can help build a better future for working people across California.
