LABOR DAY IS MORE THAN A HOLIDAY — IT’S A REMINDER OF WHO BUILT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! 

IUPAT District Council 16: The Skilled Tradespeople Behind the Work You See Every Day

Labor Day weekend means barbecues, family gatherings, and an extra day off—but do you know what Labor Day is really about?

It’s about working people.

It’s about the men and women who show up early, put on their work boots, grab their tools, and take pride in building, protecting, and improving the communities we call home.

For the members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 16, Labor Day is personal.

Every day, District Council 16 members put their skills to work across Northern California.

Floor covering professionals, Painters, Drywall finishers, Glaziers, Industrial painters, sign and  display workers, And many other skilled tradespeople.

Their work can be found in schools, hospitals, offices, public buildings, homes, and major construction projects.

You may not always know their names—but you see their work every day.

Good jobs don’t happen by accident.

Workers fought for fair wages, safer workplaces, benefits, retirement security, apprenticeships, and a voice on the job.

That’s the history behind Labor Day.

And that fight continues.

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION

One of the biggest strengths of the Union Trades is training.

Through apprenticeship and continuing education, IUPAT members develop the skills needed to compete in today’s construction industry.

It’s more than learning how to do a job.

It’s about learning a career.

It’s building a future.

And it’s allowing the next generation to earn a living with skill, pride, and dignity.

🇺🇸 THIS LABOR DAY, REMEMBER THE WORKER

Before you sit down for that Labor Day barbecue, take a look around.

The buildings.

The floors.

The painted walls.

The glass.

The finishes.

The infrastructure.

Behind much of that work are skilled tradespeople who take pride in what they do.

Labor Day isn’t just about having a day off.

It’s about recognizing the people who make our communities work.

This Labor Day, IUPAT District Council 16 proudly recognizes generations of union members who have fought to make the skilled trades stronger and to create better opportunities for working families.

So this Labor Day, don’t just celebrate the holiday.

Celebrate the worker.

Celebrate the trades.

Celebrate the strength of solidarity.

And remember: Friday, September 4^th is an OT-DDO; Saturday and Sunday are Double Time. Monday is Labor Day. Absolutely no work, as per our Constitution.
