WATSONVILLE PROJECT LABOR AGREEMENT 

On October 14th, the Watsonville City Council considered a plan to remove the Project Labor Agreement (PLA) that has been in effect for years. Once the Monterey/Santa Cruz Counties Building and Construction Trades Council learned of this proposal, the trades quickly rallied together and mobilized a strong presence at the council meeting to oppose the rollback of an agreement that directly supports union workers and their families.

That night, the council chambers were filled to capacity — not a single chair was left open. The room was packed wall to wall with union construction workers standing united, ready to make their voices heard in defense of the PLA.

The show of strength and solidarity had a clear impact. Two city councilmembers reversed their stance and decided not to remove the PLA, choosing instead to update and improve it.

This is a major win for union labor in Watsonville — a more rural area where we’re actively working to expand union presence and opportunities. It’s proof that when construction workers stand 

together, we are powerful.
