Positive Change
Posted March 6, 2026
Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
First, I would like to thank all our members for participating in V.A.C. events, attending union meetings, and helping with projects around the union hall. Over the last year and a half, I have really noticed a positive change in member participation and attitude toward upcoming events, contract negotiations, bylaws, elections, and other important union activities.
We have also made a strong effort to get out onto the job sites and talk with our members about what they would like to see in their contracts, healthcare benefits, and support for mental health. I want to thank our leadership team for putting mental health at the top of the list. When your mental health is not in a good place, it can make it difficult to focus on your trade and your work in the field.
I want to remind everyone that if you see a brother or sister who may be struggling, please ask a simple question: “Are you okay? Can I help?” Showing that you care can make a big difference.
As always, I want to stress the importance of journey worker certifications and STAR classes. There will be an SCT 1 class on May 9 in Tracy, so please check the STAR schedule. Remember, this class is the pre-qualifier for the STAR event, so it is important to stay current with your training.
Work in the Sacramento area has slowed down, and the out-of-work list has grown. However, the Enclos project is expected to begin ramping up soon, and we are hopeful that this will help reduce the number of members on the list.
Please remember that if you are out of work, you must place your name on the Out-of-Work list on the first working day of each month.
With many members currently out of work and needing assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. The union does have programs that can help members with food assistance, and I am more than happy to help guide you through those resources.
Again, please be safe out there, take care of one another, and try to attend your union meetings whenever possible.
Fraternally,
John Tweedt
