Season of Giving

Posted noviembre 26, 2025

The weekend before Thanksgiving we did our annual Turkey giveaway. Local 913, along with Locals 12 & 718 (West Bay Locals) provided 250 Turkeys to families in need in South San Francisco. DC16 teamed up with Old Town South San Francisco Group, President of the Board of San Mateo County Supervisors David Canepa and SSF Vice Mayor Mark Addiegio at Morellos Hall on Miller Ave to distribute the Turkeys along with Clothes and Toys. This year is the 7. year strong, and the event grows bigger every year as we continue to partner with more community groups and leaders. All DC16 volunteers also received a turkey for their participation.

DC16 works with Construction introduction programs to inform folks interested in a career in the trades about what our Union does to help them make choses when picking a trade. Redwood High School in Redwood City offers a Construction Introduction/ Shop class that is recognized by the Building Trades. When students complete this course and graduate high school, they are awarded several Certifications essential in the construction industry. The instructor, Jim Bender is a skilled craftsman with carpentry skills and years of worksite experience. Under Mr. Benders leadership over the years, students have built a chicken coup, planter boxes, a gazebo, a green house that is still under construction, and their most recent project is a boat haul that they hope to successfully launch at the end of the school year! He is providing these students with real world skills and experience that they will hopefully transfer into a lucrative career. Local 913 submitted a PATCH (Painters & Allied Trades for Children’s Hope) request on behalf of  the class to help them purchase new PPE for the New Year. 913 Business Representative Joe Sanders and 718s Trevor Long recently visited the class to check in on their projects and drop off the $1000 dollar donation.

Keep in mind that member can make a PATCH request if it an approved cause. The charity is specifically for things involving children. Sports, education, health etc.. If you have something you think might qualify, reach out to the hall for help submitting a request.
