Making our Money Work for US
Posted septiembre 19, 2025
Hermanos y Hermanas,
I hope this article finds you ready for a change in the season and enjoying the football season. Work has been slow lately, if you are not working make sure to get on the Out of Work List (OWL). To remain on the OWL you must call on the first day of every month. We do receive calls from EDD occasionally and if you are not on the OWL it could affect your unemployment benefits. If you have not worked for over 3 months per the Local 1237 By-Laws you can request dues assistance, please see below.
(iii)Any member who cannot work due to illness or disability for a period of not less than 30 days or who becomes unemployed through no fault of their own for a period of not less than 90 days shall have their basic monthly dues paid for a period not exceed 4 months or until a disability settlement is made, whichever is less (social security, pension, state compensation, etc.). Attending doctor’s certificate must be forwarded to the Union office before a claim will be considered. The certificate must be filed within 60 days from the date of illness or disability.
(iv)To be eligible for Dues Assistance from this fund a member must have paid into this fund for a minimum of 12 months. There also must be a minimum of 12 months between each occurrence and be a member in good standing.
(v) The eligibility of all claims upon the fund shall be determined by the Executive Board.
At the October Membership Meeting the members will vote to reallocate 10 cents from the Annuity to the STAR’s program. The STARs program was created over 18 years ago and since its inception it cost 25 cents per working hour has not increased. I ask that all members make every attempt to make this meeting and let’s have a discussion and see if 10 cents is worth investing in our members. If the members don’t allocate the 10 cents the members will not be eligible for the STARs Awards.
As many of you know that we have started to invest with United Business Bank with a CD and Money Market Account. At the September Membership Meeting it was m/s/c by the members in attendance to invest $2,000.00 a month and make our money work for us. While this money won’t do much for us older members, it will help the next generation be prepared for any potential strike and will help us provide for our members during any slow periods or strikes. On September 27. we will be hosting the DC16 Delegates Meeting at the union hall, the meeting is scheduled from 12 pm to 2 pm. Food will be provided and I encourage all members to attend.
Fraternalmente,
Randy Rojas
