I hope this article finds you doing well and getting ready to send the kids back to school. It’s been a busy summer and now we are starting to slow down. There are currently 11 apprentices and 4 journeymen on the Out of Work List. The STAR’s Schedule for January through June 2026 and can be accessed at dc16star.org. Below are the upcoming floor covering classes and the on time mandatory class SCT.

Floor Covering Skills Class   10/4/25 West Sac

First Aid/CPR/AED     11/1/25 West Sac

SCT Intro to DC16          11/1/25 Chabot College (one-time mandatory class to qualify for the STAR)

First Aid/CPR/AED     12/13/25 West Sac

Local 1237 members have not been utilizing the floor covering classes. If there is a class you would like to see please let me know and I will speak with the Director of Training and see if he can get the training. If you need a class and can’t get into it because it is full, please let me know if I can get ten members, we have a good chance of getting another class scheduled. I will also text you when a class has not been filled or when a new class is scheduled. In October we will have a Special Called Meeting to do a reallocation to the January 1, 2026, wage schedule. The STAR Program is asking for a 10 cent increase to make sure that the program can continue to run and train the members of DC16. We will talk about it at the September meeting, I hope you will make every effort to attend.

Recently I was made aware that some members were not getting reimbursed gas mileage (the current IRS rate is $0.70 per mile) for using their vehicle to get to jobsites past 60 miles. I also discovered that some members were not getting travel time from the dispatch point when they are asked to stay out of town. Also, sub-checks are due in advance, not the following week. We will discuss this at the Membership Meeting in September. Below is Article 27 Section 2 (a-c)

  1. SUBSISTENCE
  1. When employees are required to live away from their personal place of residence, in order to report for work when and where directed by the Employer, each employee shall receive lodging, or an amount equal to reasonable lodging, in advance, plus subsistence in the amount of seventy five dollars ($75.00) per day, in advance, on a separate check.
  1. Round trip airfare, mileage, or transportation shall be provided by the Employer on all jobs in which subsistence is required.
  1. Employees shall receive Travel Time, from the point of dispatch to the jobsite and return, on all jobs in which subsistence is required.
