Last weekend we celebrated Labor Day with a 4-day weekend. As I was going through Instagram, I saw a\npost from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial\nOrganizations (AFL-CIO). It said;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLabor Day is not about hamburgers, hot dogs, or a sunny day\noff. It\u2019s about you. It\u2019s about the worker. It\u2019s about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory\nfire. It\u2019s about the Ludlow\nMassacre. It\u2019s about your honor. It\u2019s about your dignity.\u201d AFL-CIO <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked up the Triangle\nShirtwaist Factory fire ad this is what I found;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Triangle Shirtwaist Factory\nfire in the Greenwich\nVillage<\/a> neighborhood of Manhattan<\/a>, New York City<\/a>, on March 25, 1911, was the deadliest industrial disaster<\/a> in the history of the city, and one\nof the deadliest in U.S. history. The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment\nworkers<\/a> \u2013 123 women and girls\nand 23 menwho died from the fire, smoke\ninhalation<\/a>, or falling or jumping to\ntheir deaths. Most of the victims were recent Italian<\/a> or Jewish<\/a> immigrant women and girls aged 14\nto 23 of the victims whose ages are known, the oldest victim was\n43-year-old Providenza Panno, and the youngest were 14-year-olds Kate Leone and\nRosaria “Sara” Maltese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The factory was located on\nthe 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of the Asch Building<\/a>, at 23\u201329 Washington Place, near Washington Square Park<\/a>. The 1901 building still stands today\nand is now known as the Brown Building<\/a>. It is part of and owned by New York University<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the doors to the\nstairwells and exits were locked a common practice at the time to prevent\nworkers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u2013 many of the workers could not\nescape from the burning building and jumped from the high windows. The fire led\nto legislation requiring improved factory safety standards<\/a> and helped spur the growth of\nthe International\nLadies’ Garment Workers’ Union<\/a> (ILGWU),\nwhich fought for better working conditions for sweatshop<\/a> workers.\u201d Wikipedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n Over the last 110 years we have come so far from what\nhappened in this tragic fire. We have 2\nmandatory breaks and no less than a half hour lunch. We have designated days off, holidays and\n4-day weekends that if we work any of the 4 days we are paid at double\ntime. Over the years through labors\nsolidarity, hard fought battles and never give up attitude, has given us worker\u2019s\nrights, dignity and a living wage. All\nof this came at a high price, many people lost their lives during the\nstruggle. Now a days it\u2019s a struggle to\nget members to vote, attend meetings or help friends of labor campaign.
