{"id":7647,"date":"2021-09-13T09:41:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T16:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dc16iupat.org\/?p=7647"},"modified":"2021-09-13T09:41:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T16:41:59","slug":"labor-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dc16iupat.org\/es\/labor-day\/","title":{"rendered":"D\u00eda del Trabajo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Brothers and Sisters,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last weekend we celebrated Labor Day with a 4-day weekend.&nbsp; As I was going through Instagram, I saw a\npost from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial\nOrganizations (AFL-CIO).&nbsp; It said;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor Day is not about hamburgers, hot dogs, or a sunny day\noff.&nbsp; It\u2019s about you.&nbsp; It\u2019s about the worker.&nbsp; It\u2019s about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory\nfire.&nbsp; It\u2019s about the Ludlow\nMassacre.&nbsp; It\u2019s about your honor.&nbsp; It\u2019s about your dignity.\u201d AFL-CIO <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked up the Triangle\nShirtwaist Factory fire ad this is what I found;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; \u201cThe&nbsp;Triangle Shirtwaist Factory\nfire&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenwich_Village\">Greenwich\nVillage<\/a>&nbsp;neighborhood of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan\">Manhattan<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>, on March 25, 1911, was the deadliest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_industrial_disasters\">industrial disaster<\/a>&nbsp;in the history of the city, and one\nof the deadliest in U.S. history.&nbsp;The fire caused the deaths of 146&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garment_worker\">garment\nworkers<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 123 women and girls\nand 23 menwho died from the fire,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smoke_inhalation\">smoke\ninhalation<\/a>, or falling or jumping to\ntheir deaths. Most of the victims were recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_people\">Italian<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_American\">Jewish<\/a>&nbsp;immigrant women and girls aged 14\nto 23&nbsp;of the victims whose ages are known, the oldest victim was\n43-year-old Providenza Panno, and the youngest were 14-year-olds Kate Leone and\nRosaria &#8220;Sara&#8221; Maltese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The factory was located on\nthe 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asch_Building\">Asch Building<\/a>, at 23\u201329 Washington Place, near&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_Square_Park\">Washington Square Park<\/a>. The 1901 building still stands today\nand is now known as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brown_Building_(Manhattan)\">Brown Building<\/a>. It is part of and owned by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_University\">New York University<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the doors to the\nstairwells and exits were locked a common practice at the time to prevent\nworkers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fire#cite_note-Liff-8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 many of the workers could not\nescape from the burning building and jumped from the high windows.
