Joshua Khiev<\/strong>
Local Union 3 – Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

District Council 16 is proud to feature Josh Khiev, a dedicated member of Local 3 who has been with the Union for just over a year and a half. In that short time, Josh has already gained valuable skills, found pride in his work, and embraced the opportunities that come with a career in the trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reason I went into the Union was because of the benefits they offer,\u201d he shares. \u201cI wanted to think about the future, so that\u2019s why I decided to join.\u201d That foresight and focus on building a stable life highlight one of the key reasons many choose this career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his favorite experiences so far, one project stands out. \u201cMy favorite project since I\u2019ve been in the Union was my wallcovering job when I had to lay cork tiles down on the walls,\u201d Josh says. \u201cI like how the outcome looks.\u201d The creativity and satisfaction of seeing a job well done continue to drive his passion for the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a profession that relies on coordination and precision, Josh recognizes the importance of strong interpersonal skills. \u201cHaving good communication is crucial for the men and women in the trades,\u201d he says. Through his time on the job, Josh has also developed a solid work ethic and grown into a more confident communicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Josh enjoys most about being a Union painter is the variety. \u201cI enjoy working at different job sites and seeing different areas I\u2019ve never been to,\u201d he shares. The constant change in environment keeps things fresh and allows him to expand both his skills and his horizons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DC16 is proud to support his journey and looks forward to watching his career grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javier Vazquez
Local Union 487 – Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Javier Vazquez is an 85% Commercial Painting Apprentice currently working with Applied Finishes. With a strong work ethic, a love for learning, and a commitment to community, Javier represents the next generation of leadership in our trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javier\u2019s path to the Union began with a conversation. \u201cWhat inspired me to join was talking to my friend Bart Pantoja,\u201d he says. \u201cI just loved all that the Union could do for me and my family.\u201d That initial spark led to a career where Javier is now building something meaningful\u2014not just for himself, but for his community and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Javier\u2019s proudest moments came while painting a church in Paradise, California\u2014a town devastated by wildfire in recent years. \u201cJust knowing I\u2019m helping rebuild a great community made me proud of the work I\u2019m doing,\u201d he says. It\u2019s a reminder that the work of Union painters often reaches far beyond the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javier believes the key to success lies in the details\u2014and in learning from those around you. \u201cYou must pay attention to how others work so if you have to do that specific task, you already have an idea of how it needs to be done,\u201d he explains. \u201cYou learn a lot from others.\u201d This mindset has helped him grow into a more skilled, adaptable, and reliable tradesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to mastering technical skills, Javier has developed strong communication and teamwork through his time in the field and apprenticeship classes. These interpersonal skills are critical on the jobsite, where trust, timing, and coordination make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I enjoy most is the pride I can take in the work after it\u2019s been done,\u201d Javier shares. \u201cAnd the bonds between my fellow members, whether it be at work or at the apprenticeship classes.\u201d That sense of pride and connection is what makes being a part of DC16 truly special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonio Miller<\/strong>
Local Union 741 – Industrial Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Antonio brings focus, pride, and a deep respect for the craft and the brotherhood that surrounds it. Antonio\u2019s path to the trades began at home. \u201cWatching my dad work in the Union as an electrician made me pursue my career in the Trades,\u201d he shares. Growing up around union values and seeing firsthand the stability and respect that comes with skilled work sparked his drive to carve out his own path within the trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the many projects he\u2019s been a part of, one stands out clearly: The American River Bridge in Sacramento. \u201cThat was my favorite project,\u201d Antonio says, \u201cbecause I got to dive deep into the hands-on side of industrial painting.\u201d From blasting and painting to learning the ins and outs of industrial equipment\u2014such as blast pots, spray rigs, and surface preparation standards”\u2014it was a true learning ground and a point of pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonio is soaking up every opportunity to grow. His daily work requires mastering technical tools, maintaining safety, and delivering high-quality finishes on critical infrastructure. The attention to detail and precision required in industrial painting has sharpened his skills and deepened his respect for the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Antonio values most isn\u2019t just the work\u2014it\u2019s the people. \u201cThe benefits and great people I have met and came across at work\u201d make every day worthwhile. \u201cI love the Brotherhood and how strong it really is,\u201d he says, giving special thanks to Business Representative Dustin Spurgeon for his constant support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonio Miller represents the spirit of DC16\u2014skilled, committed, and part of something greater than himself. We\u2019re proud to have him in our ranks and can\u2019t wait to see where his journey takes him next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angel Rodriquez
Local Union 487 – Drywall Finisher<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meet Angel Rodriquez, a 95% Drywall Finishing Apprentice currently working with Raymond Interiors and proud member of District Council 16. Angel is not only mastering a skilled trade but also building a future he can be proud of\u2014one wall at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Angel, the trades offered something more than just a paycheck. \u201cBeing able to provide for my family and make a career doing something I can be proud of and enjoy\u201d is what drew him in. What sealed the deal? The complexity of drywall finishing. Angel found inspiration in discovering just how much precision, technique, and dedication go into delivering a quality finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about his favorite project so far, Angel didn\u2019t hesitate: The new Sacramento Courthouse. \u201cIt was my favorite because I was able to learn a lot about leaving a quality product,\u201d he says. \u201cI was able to be a part of every single step\u2014from fire tape to level 5 and final sand.\u201d The project not only refined his skills, it gave him a chance to see how every phase contributes to a flawless result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angel believes that thriving in drywall finishing requires a sharp eye and strong values. \u201cAttention to detail, good work ethic, and being willing to think outside of the box to get the job done,\u201d are, in his view, the most critical traits of a successful tradesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than anything, Angel loves the sense of pride that comes with his work. \u201cI enjoy having pride in my work, being able to look at a building or a wall and say I was a part of that.\u201d Being part of DC16 has also opened the door to giving back. Through Union VAC (Volunteer Action Committee) events, Angel stays involved in his community, using his hands and heart to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrian Diaz
Local Union 487 – Industrial Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

District Council 16 is proud to shine a light on Adrian Diaz, a 75% Industrial Painting Apprentice currently working with Mason Painting. Adrian\u2019s journey into the trades is not only about learning a skill\u2014it\u2019s about changing his life and building a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrian credits his family as the driving force behind his decision to enter the trades. \u201cMy family inspired me,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to turn my life around.\u201d That commitment to personal growth and determination to succeed is what makes Adrian a standout apprentice in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrian\u2019s favorite project to date has been the North Area Recovery Station in North Highlands. \u201cHere, I have been able to do every aspect of the job from sandblasting to applying the coatings,\u201d he explains. This hands-on, full-scope experience has allowed him to develop essential technical skills and gain confidence in his craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to success in the trade, Adrian keeps it simple and honest: \u201cI think the most important thing is to show up every day, on time and ready to work. Showing up is half the battle.\u201d That mindset of consistency and accountability is the foundation of any great tradesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his time with DC16 and Mason Painting, Adrian has learned key industry skills like sandblasting while also improving his communication and teamwork. \u201cI\u2019ve learned to better communicate with my coworkers,\u201d he says, showing that growth in the trades isn\u2019t just technical\u2014it\u2019s personal, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrian Diaz is a great example of how the Union trades can provide opportunity, structure, and a second chance. DC16 is proud to support him on his path and looks forward to his continued success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyler Modar
Local Union 376 – Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Skyler Modar is a Commercial Painter with Local 376 who is just 10 months into the trade and already making a strong impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyler\u2019s path to the trades was inspired by family ties and a clear vision for the future. \u201cMy family is in the Union, and they inspired me to join,\u201d Skyler shares. \u201cSo I can one day retire, join a great trade, and be financially stable.\u201d That strong foundation has given Skyler a powerful sense of purpose and direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the projects so far, one stands out: The Contra Costa Jail. \u201cIt\u2019s been my favorite project because I\u2019ve been able to learn so many new techniques,\u201d Skyler says. The opportunity to expand skills on a large-scale, challenging job site is exactly the kind of experience that helps newer members grow into confident tradespeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyler emphasizes that success in the trades depends on more than just skill\u2014it\u2019s also about mindset and commitment. \u201cTaking initiative, being safe, and showing up\u201d are key, according to Skyler. These habits not only lead to personal growth but also build trust on every job site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI enjoy learning my career, the financial independence and stability, and knowing that one day I will retire with a nice pension.\u201d It\u2019s this blend of hands-on learning, strong support, and long-term security that makes being part of DC16 so valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn Maldonado
Local Union 913 – Drywall Finisher<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Growing up, Evelyn Maldonado would often look at construction sites and wonder, How is it possible for people to build something like that? Today, she doesn\u2019t have to wonder\u2014she\u2019s living it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow I have the opportunity to see it all get built from the ground up,\u201d she says with pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn\u2019s favorite project to date is one that\u2019s close to her heart\u2014the renovation of the Yosemite Apartments in San Francisco\u2019s Tenderloin district. It wasn\u2019t just her first major job; it was a turning point in her development as a tradesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat project was special because I learned so much from my team and others around me. It really opened the door to what this work is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn believes the key to success in her trade is a mix of attention to detail, strong teamwork, and coordination. But she also emphasizes the importance of being adaptable and having a mindset of continuous learning\u2014two qualities she\u2019s developed since joining the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to stay open to learning new skills. That\u2019s how you grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Evelyn enjoys most about her trade is the chance to showcase her talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI take pride in what I do. Every task is a chance to prove to myself\u2014and others\u2014what I\u2019m capable of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sammy McGuire<\/strong>
Local Union 913 – Industrial Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For many of us in District Council 16, the path to the trades wasn\u2019t a straight line\u2014it was a story of redemption, growth, and purpose. For one member, that journey began in a place most would want to forget: juvenile hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 16 years old, he began to seriously reflect on what kind of future was still possible. \u201cWhat inspired me to get into the trade was when I was in juvenile hall. I started researching the best jobs someone with a record could get,\u201d he recalls. That determination led him to the trades, where he found not just a job\u2014but a career and a brotherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His favorite project so far? The 783 Headworks. \u201cI was on the paint crew and got to spray the channels that hold our poop water,\u201d he says with a laugh. To some, it might not sound glamorous. But for him, it was deeply meaningful. \u201cI grew up around the corner from this wastewater facility. I\u2019ve seen it my whole life. Being able to work on it\u2014it felt like I was giving back to the community I came from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To succeed as an industrial painter, he emphasizes the importance of attention to detail, efficiency, and quality work. But beyond the technical, the trade has also taught him discipline and organization. \u201cI\u2019ve learned how to build containment, spray, and operate industrial equipment like a 100-foot-plus boom lift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he enjoys most is the variety. \u201cEvery day is different. One day you\u2019re sandblasting, the next day you\u2019re spraying. Then you\u2019re building containment or working from a 100-foot boom lift. I believe I really chose a good trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, he admits, the trade chose him just as much as he chose it. \u201cMy business rep Joe Sanders asked me about trying it out when commercial work was getting slow. I gave it a shot\u2014and four years later, I\u2019m still here and going strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His story is a reminder that no matter where you start, with determination, support, and hard work, you can build a future to be proud of. That\u2019s the power of the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rafael Aguilar
Local Union 487 – Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With encouragement from his father, Rafael took the leap into the union and hasn\u2019t looked back since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father helped me get in, and I took advantage of the opportunity,\u201d Rafael says. \u201cI\u2019m happy to be working in the union.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Rafael\u2019s most memorable experiences so far has been working on the Walmart distribution center in Stockton. The project stood out not only because of its scale but also for the variety of work involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got to do both interior and exterior work and use different materials you don\u2019t always see on every job. It was a great experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Success in the trades, according to Rafael, comes down to being observant and always willing to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to pay attention to details and watch how others work. That way, when it\u2019s your turn to take on that task, you already have an idea of how to do it. You learn so much just by being present and engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rafael has been a painter since coming to the United States, and he continues to take pride in the skills he\u2019s developed through union work\u2014skills that go far beyond brushes and rollers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really enjoy painting. Honestly, I can\u2019t see myself doing anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a strong work ethic, a passion for the craft, and a commitment to learning, Rafael Aguilar represents the heart of the union workforce\u2014dedicated, skilled, and proud of what he builds every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austin Tait
Local Union 718 – Glazier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Austin was inspired by his father, a seasoned glazier with 39 years of experience, and knew early on that he wanted to follow in his footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy dad\u2019s dedication to the trade inspired me,\u201d Austin shares. \u201cHe\u2019s been glazing for nearly four decades, and I\u2019ve always admired his craftsmanship and work ethic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now building a path of his own, Austin has learned that success in glazing requires more than just skill\u2014it takes foresight and planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the most crucial skills is being able to think ahead,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019ve always got to be ready for the next step in whatever you\u2019re doing. That kind of awareness makes the work smoother and safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Austin enjoys most is the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with each completed project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like stepping back and seeing all the work you did come together. It\u2019s something real, something lasting\u2014and I know I was a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With deep roots in the trade and a clear passion for the craft, Austin Tate is not only continuing a family tradition\u2014he\u2019s building a name for himself in the glazing industry, one project at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cristian Campos
Local Union 3 – Drywall Finisher<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cristian Campos didn\u2019t always know he wanted to be a taper, but a single moment during a pre-apprenticeship program changed the course of his future. While visiting the DC16 Training Facility through the Rising Sun Pre-Apprentice program, he watched an apprentice using a bazooka\u2014a drywall finishing tool that immediately caught his attention. That hands-on demonstration sparked Cristian\u2019s interest in the drywall finishing trade and launched his journey into the world of taping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Cristian has embraced the path with enthusiasm and pride. His favorite project to date? Working at Kaiser Hospital in Modesto, CA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt feels amazing knowing that I can leave my legacy by working in places such as a hospital,\u201d Cristian shares. \u201cThere\u2019s something powerful about contributing to a building that serves the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his apprenticeship, Cristian has developed more than just technical skills. He believes that communication is one of the most important traits for success in the trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to understand your tasks, and if you don\u2019t, you need to speak up. Good communication with your foreman is key to doing your job efficiently and safely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he enjoys most about his trade is both the craft and the results. Learning how to master the tools of the trade is a rewarding challenge\u2014but so is stepping back at the end of the day and seeing the finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course, being part of a union brings additional benefits. Cristian values the strong benefits package and the union\u2019s organizing power, which helps keep members working and protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Gold
Local Union 767 – Glazier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Justin Gold, a proud member of District Council 16, joining the trades wasn\u2019t just a career decision\u2014it was a way of honoring a legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father was a tradesman, and I wanted to have a life that would mean something like his,\u201d Justin shares. Watching his father build a meaningful life through skilled labor inspired him to pursue a path where his work would have real impact\u2014both for himself and his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His first job set the tone. \u201cSac State was my first job, and it shaped what the rest of my career was going to look like.\u201d That early experience laid the foundation for his professional values: precision, accountability, and pride in craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin takes great pride in his ability to solve problems on the job. \u201cBeing able to identify issues and solve them efficiently with the tools at hand is something I value,\u201d he says. Over time, he\u2019s built a deep knowledge of tools and techniques\u2014not only those that help him excel on the job, but those that carry over into everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for Justin, the union means more than just skills and job security\u2014it means solidarity. \u201cThe assurance that what I work for is protected by the union\u2014that I don\u2019t have to worry when something happens because my brothers and sisters have my back\u2014that\u2019s everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His story is one of purpose, pride, and the power of union brotherhood. For Justin Gold, being part of District Council 16 is more than a job\u2014it\u2019s a life built on values that last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shanice “Shine” Crenshaw<\/strong>
Local 913 – Painter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Shanice, a proud member of Local 913, lives in San Francisco and joined the Union in 2022. Sponsored by California Drywall, she has been building her career with them ever since. During her time there, she was introduced to wallcovering\u2014a specialized skill within painting that adds valuable versatility to her trade. Shanice is a rising star in our Union, and we\u2019re excited to share her journey so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sat down with her to learn more about what drives her and what she\u2019s gained from her experience in the trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What inspired you to pursue a career in the trades?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to get into the trades because I knew it would provide longevity as far as money. Being able to take care of my family, and even learning a new skill that I will have for the rest of my life. I can take painting with me everywhere. It\u2019s universal!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has been your favorite project so far, and why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy favorite project so far has been working at SFO Airport because you see a whole bunch of different people. We painted the Red Line & Blue Line transit signs at every terminal. It was done working overnight. It feels good to say that I worked on something so important and that means so much to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What skills do you think are essential to be successful in your trade? What skills have you gained since joining the Union?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think being able to pay attention to detail is the best way to be successful in this trade, especially being a painter. Spending the extra time to go over your work and making sure you\u2019re actually proud of it can make a big difference. Since being in the trades, I\u2019ve gotten much better at problem solving. Mistakes happen, but being able to fix something makes the job go a whole lot smoother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you enjoy most about your trade?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe thing I love most about painting is making art. I love colors and I love to see things pop. Seeing something you painted just feels good\u2014knowing you made that difference to a building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shanice is currently an 80% apprentice and is on track to graduate as a Journeyworker in 2027. She represents the future of our industry and reminds us all why investing in apprentices is so critical to the strength of our Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the Drywall Apprenticeship program was more that just a career move\u2014it was the pursuit of a passion and a commitment to breaking barriers in the trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had a passion for building things and working with my hands,\u201d Jade shares. But beyond that, she had a deeper motivation: \u201cI wanted to be the difference and be another woman to get into the trades.\u201d In an industry where women are still underrepresented, Jade is forging her own path\u2014and inspiring others along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of her favorite projects so far has been working at the Contra Costa jail house, where she\u2019s been caulking and fire taping rooms. \u201cIt\u2019s hands-on, challenging work, but there\u2019s a lot of pride that comes with knowing the job you\u2019re doing matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the drywall trade, precision is everything, and Jade thrives on the details. \u201cI think being very detail-oriented is most crucial for success while doing drywall,\u201d she explains. And it shows\u2014she\u2019s developed strong skills in mudding, taping, cutting, and texturing techniques that continue to set her apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHonestly, I love everything about my job,\u201d she says. \u201cFrom mudding and taping to caulking and installation, every task brings a new opportunity to grow and improve.\u201d But it\u2019s not just the work that keeps her motivated\u2014it\u2019s the union that stands behind her. \u201cOne thing I enjoy about being part of a union is always having security, support, and knowing that the union has my back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jade Bui is proving that there\u2019s no limit to what you can achieve when passion meets purpose\u2014and that the future of the trades is stronger when it includes everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becoming a skilled floor coverer wasn\u2019t just about finding a job\u2014it was about continuing a family legacy and building a future of his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeeing my dad and uncle in the floor covering trade with Hoem & Associates motivated me to join the trade,\u201d Edgar shares. From a young age, he witnessed firsthand the success that hard work and dedication could bring. \u201cI saw how successful I could be if I worked hard to provide for my family.\u201d That vision set him on a path of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Edgar is living out that potential\u2014and thriving. His recipe for success is simple but powerful: \u201cWorking hard and paying attention to details is key to success in the floor covering trade\u2014or really, in any trade.\u201d It\u2019s that mindset that has earned him recognition and pride in his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Edgar\u2019s favorite parts of the job is the ability to see a project through from start to finish. \u201cI really enjoy seeing the beginning to the end of each project. I feel pride and joy knowing I\u2019ve done top-of-the-line work.\u201d For Edgar, the satisfaction doesn\u2019t just come from laying floors\u2014it comes from knowing he\u2019s delivering quality that stands the test of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dedication and skill were showcased on a national stage when he competed in the International Surfaces Event\u2014and took home first place in the floor covering contest. It was a moment that confirmed what his work already proved: Edgar Lopez is among the best in the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
